Wolfman

February 27, 2008

wolfman.gif

This is a rough little vector drawing of my Wolfman mini. Usually I use the pen tool as my heavy lifter, this time I tried to be a little more organic by using the pencil tool.

I’ll probably redraw the little guy eventually, although I will probably redraw my sketch to really get a grip of the details instead of making decisions in Illustrator.

I will also use transparency in multiply mode to produce better shadows.

Monster Minis-Rough

I was never into monster flicks as a kid but I am a big Tim Burton fan and I enjoy watching movies with the big 3 (Lon, Bela, & Boris). I look forward to vectorizing these little guys when I get the time.

My idea was to keep them all the same (collectively cuddly) size and yet communicate their individual monster personalities.

Graverobber Draft

This is a (scaled-down) draft based on one of the thumbnails. There is a plethora of adjustments I need to make before the final composition. I’m not happy with the upper left corner. The figure needs a lot of work too.

I scanned the pencil sketch, adjusted the levels in Photoshop, and did some very rough color tints to get a sense of depth. I’m reading Shawn Martinbrough’s How to Draw Noir Comics (stylistically layed out similar to the fantastic DC how-to series also published by Watson-Guptill) and I’m interested in attempting a high-contrast version of the image. I also want to try a vector version, we’ll see how ambitious I get.

Grave Robber Thumbnails

This is one of my ongoing projects. I wrote a poem called “The Graverobber” and decided to make it a short sequential piece. I’ve done some breakdowns but I’m still refining the style. I decided to do a pseudo cover for the story to help get the creative ball rolling. Here are some thumbnails. I’m working on a larger refined piece which I’ll post sometime (soon, hopefully).

Monster Chrismas Mash

February 14, 2008

I was noodling around with this image over Christmas. I had started drawing some of the characters one day in the car (my wife was driving, sheesh). I thought there was a nice Addams family vibe going on and I wanted to practice some Photoshop coloring. Not quite what I pictured, but Merry Monster Christmas anyway . . .Monster Christmas

Sharpie Sketch

Just an idea I’m working on and a quick sketch to get my feet wet. . .

I can barely get my mouth to say “blogosphere” . . .

February 13, 2008

. . . but as it turns out, I’m actually doing the impossible: getting my first live content on the interweb in about 2 years. Hello to my new SketchCrawl comrades. This art blog is mostly due to seeing your amazing stuff and thinking, “hey, nifty”.

I’m committing to at least one weekly update with at least one image (baby steps).  I’m looking forward to it.
